Ask Kathryn: Securing the Wealth in an Irregular-shaped Lot

A gorgeous house on a gorgeous property, yet the trees are taking over and the flood line has risen.

Q: Kathryn, I want to know more about the outside of the house. My lot is irregularly shaped and so is my house. Is there a cure out there to line things up and secure my wealth area?

A: There is nothing wrong with an irregular shaped lot, as long as it doesn’t funnel energy off the property or hold bad energy where you need strength.
Feng shui talks about a how a house needs to placed properly on a lot; everything needs be in order and secures in it’s place.

When speaking in terms of  your own body and also your house, the concept is the same; the back must be protected. Feng shui relates this to the yard as having a black tortoise at your back: heavy, solid and trustworthy.

You’ll find your wealth area at the back on the left side when viewed from the street. If the lot is wider at the back than the front, you may have a ‘bonus area’ without knowing! More protection IS A BONUS!

Unprotected homes with lots that drop off in the back or very small and tight to the house are very vulnerable, and each one requires its own creative cure.

I can list a few options to consider:

  • If the land slopes down towards the back, plant trees and bushes for height and this will raise support for this area.
  • Heavy boulders, evergreens or a fence can define a property line. Think of things that are solid, unmoving and protective.
  • Add more lighting to draw attention to the back of the property. I love to see lights (to light-UP this area) on a fence or on a high pole.
  • If you have concerns with your neighbours, lane way or issues with other homes or businesses, you may decide to do something in a larger scale.
Use a large stones/bricks as a heavy barrier between you and the concerns.
  • If you have a narrow back yard (width size is smaller than the front measurement), you may need help securing the ‘missing space’. Ask a professional to help you square off your lot and set up the proper cures to protect this area.

NOTE: If you have a creek, pond, pool or any water  on your property, evaluate the scale of the water element. A small fountain, pool or garden with a koi pond, should all be scaled appropriately,
Regarding this image above. The flooding of this natural lake is not supporting the home. In fact, the house is level to the water line!
You can gage this yourself: Take the height of the home (two stories). If this vertical height is 20 feet for example, measure 20 feet out again horizontally from the house towards the water. If you hit water before 20 feet, the house is not supported. A full 20 feet is required (matching the height of the house) to indicate whether or not you are safe. Do not buy a house too close to the water on any side: front, back or side.  The same factors for a home on a cliff. Basically, if your house can’t ‘lie down’ horizontally, it is very difficult to correct this measurement to be safe. T0o close is too close!

Protect your wealth area the best that you can. A feng shui professional can help you with details.

I hope this helps to answer your question.

Warmth, Kathryn
