ASK Kathryn about Industrial Metal ceilings.

HI Kathryn,

My husband came across an article about utilizing the exposed ductwork for finishing a basement area and office.

Is this ok for Feng Shui?

This would solve some of our problems with our ceiling in the basement.

We would plan to use drywall or shiplap for the rest of the ceiling to cover up the wires.

If this is ok, which type of ductwork is best? (round or box style)

Hi Lisa, thanks for your note.

I’ve seen a lot of restaurants and commercial places are using this ‘exposed duct work’; as this is easy to spray paint everything to make it look uniform.
It’s a very industrial style, yet, not-so-much accepted in the residential sector.

Things to think about:

1. Metal is metal; very cold feeling. This element can be very harsh and (energetically) can harm efforts to grow and expand. (As metal energy is sharp and chops/harms wood element.)
   Not all bad. This can be balanced in a place that is overflowing with wood. (a log cabin, etc.)
2. Heavy metals overhead including ceiling fans can alter sleep patterns – if that is important to you.
3. Exposed metals can also aid in bouncing noise off the walls and ceilings.
4. Yes, we need ducts to run circulation through the house. I find they ‘feel’ better if they (ducts and wires) are covered in a drop ceiling; this allows some insulation for any noise, and keeps the visual esthetics a lot cleaner, for better function and flow.
5. As for the framework for the ceiling. Either shape of ductwork will work. I prefer the box shape as it easier to finish with a flat surface.
6. If you are planning to use drywall or ship lap- this is a bit extreme- regarding cost of framing and finishing products. A drop acoustic ceiling, will give you a buffer for music, and general noise/activities or ping pong/pool games included. You’ll still need to set up the frame work and pop in the tiles; no patching, sanding or painting needed.
7. Lastly, regarding the area where you plan to have an office. Set boundaries for this area as ‘private space’ just so others in the family don’t ‘take over’. Finish and decorate this to your personality and what you need to concentrate and thrive in your new chapter of life.

To answer the BIG question: Is this good Feng Shui?
That depends what immediate goals you have, as well as,  long-term use of this space.
