Ask Kathryn: About a boy who won’t sleep in his bedroom.
Q: Kathryn, my 6 yr old son just refuses to sleep in his own room. Last fall, we repainted his room and bought new, fun sheets. I read an article about NOT decorating with super heroes and heavy energy. We hung a beautiful mirror in his room. He still won’t sleep in his room, and he hates the mirror. Can feng shui help here?
A: Absolutely! First of all, you were very smart not to include super heroes in your décor. Many times, these images seem to over-stimulate a child at bedtime.
Children can be sensitive to light, shapes and image. As for the mirror, it could be reflecting light in the mirror at night. Even a small night-light or street lamp can cast a spooky glow in any room.
On the other hand, think back; where did the mirror come from? Is this item brand new, or repurposed from another room?
Let’s begin again with our check list.
1. At six years old the child does have a voice in what he wants in his bedroom. With your guidance, you can help choose a proper color for the room and help him pick out the sheets and comforter he relates with.
2. If he is one of those kids that relates to textures, a specific fuzzy blanket, or flannel item will help soothe the sole. I find a little mat on the hardwood floor is nice to wake up to.
3. Some kids need a book, audio tape or similar to just settle a bit. Does he request a story from you before lights out?
4. Items around the room should include things he like, that inspire him, what he’s like to BE when he’s older. I agree with the ‘no super-hero’s’ on the walls. Keep the decor on the tamer side.
5. Alternatively, one of my other client’s kids liked little stickers on the wall near his bed; perhaps he needs a little company in the form of a cartoon character or the like.
To wrap this up, your child has a voice so listen to his concerns. Be patient. I’m happy to chat with you further.
