The Miniature Vision Board

Carrying a visual reminder can help you focus during the day.

Looking for motivation from the same desk, day after day? Does the objective of the task ever get lost?

Our lives are full of ‘to-do lists’, reminders or open folders; and many of us invite distractions regularly into our day. Many professionals need a reminder or something visual to help keep on track.

Previously, I’ve talked about using a Vision Board. Visuals, such as bulletin boards with your life goals can provide at a glance, objectives and goals you carefully wish to pursue throughout the year. Alternatively you could hang a poster of a sailing vacation coming up next year or a country you wish to visit; to bring incentive to your work area.

In feng shui, the vision board is used to keep ‘in sight’ the goals and energy required to continue productivity. As many self-employed people have limited space for full sized motivational materials, it is still possible to benefit from a variety of visuals on a smaller scale.

Here are a few ideas:

  1. Start a collection of ‘Cool Quotes’: All those little slips of paper you’ve been collecting can finally put to work. Purchase a small coil-ring notepad (3X5) with a hard cover so it can stand up. Transfer all the inspirational quotes and advice from mentors into the book horizontally. Add more to this whenever you find a quote that resonates with you. Place this on your desk and look through your collection regularly; select a fresh quote daily or weekly.
  2. Screen savers and postcards: same-same, but different. You choose the slide show, digitally or tangible. An assortment of images or quotes (chosen specifically for your goals) will provide some variety as well as a reminder. Pick up postcards, greeting cards and whimsical visuals to start an ‘idea box’ when you need to refresh that spark.
  3. Carry a ‘lucky rabbit’s foot’: a supportive amulet or equivalent with you each day. I found a little shop, while on my travels, filled with divine inspirational items. The key chain I bought is full of colour and insight. As some items can be a bit bulky, it is okay to carry this inside a purse or hang it near your work station. As long as they are purchased with ‘intention’, smaller sized talismans or ‘lucky charms’ can still support you from the safety of a car, purse or pocket.

What do I need for visual reinforcements?

Anything that makes you smile, feel proud, accomplished or fulfilled can be use for your visual enjoyment and satisfaction. Use colours, textures, special effects, money, sales projections, tangible achievements and much more!

Choose things that agree with you individually. This is very personal, different items could have a secret meaning to you. The options are infinite! Take the time to evaluate each and everything that goes onto your desk, your purse, your car and everything that you can control in your space.

How long do I leave these things hanging around?

For example: A talisman, purchased with ‘intention’ can remind you each time you look at it, that you are on track and moving forwards. By placing something on your desk because you have to (as Kathryn suggested this), will not have the same motivation or meaning.

You can keep your visual motivation items (working for you) until you finish the project, meet the intended goal or decide to alter the plan. Options to redirect goals should always be made positively to continue momentum. It is all okay; sometimes plans can change or simply run- their-course.

You owe it to YOURSELF to rise above procrastination and the distractions; remind yourself why you are working, and help move your successes and goals along. Using visual reminders can work for you!

Your life, your goals, your rewards!
