Slow Down; You’re moving too fast…

Take time to enjoy a moment in time.

Take time to enjoy a moment in time.

Mindfulness has been the new buzzword used to describe being quiet and ‘being in the moment’. It is easier to talk about, than it is to do it!
Mindfulness is a practise that allows you to actually forget about the ‘stuff’ going on around you, and focus on the task-at-hand. Mindfulness takes discipline. In feng shui, the practise of mindfulness is most important as this allows a way to cut through the distractions and find out what is really going on, right now. Again, it is easier to describe some days, than to actually tune out the distractions.

There is a story told about a feng shui Master who was washing dishes, when one of his guests offered to help. The Master told the guest that he can help -if he could only wash the dishes; an exercise in mindfulness. Only washing the dishes is a tough task when it becomes automatic over the years and we don’t pay any attention when performing this task.

So, what else are we missing in our day? Perhaps you overlooked the gentle opening of a flower, the smile on your dog (dogs do smile), or where you put down the car keys. What will happen when we slow down and seek meaning to our activity? Will we actually enjoy life a little more? So what is the risk? Why does everyone move so fast? Take a moment to figure this out. Many of us are running around trying to fill our own deadlines, our personal self-inflicted deadlines.
Stop and ask yourself:
• What happens if I get home an hour later?
• When was the last time I actually watched a sunset?
• Do I really need to have an anxiety attack on my way to work?

A few weeks ago, I brought a girlfriend a bunch of flowers. She was delighted, as expected. What I didn’t expect when she opened the bunch; she stopped to address each one. She picked up each stem one at a time, snipped off a bit at the base of the stem and lovingly placed them one-by-one in the vase. It was beautiful to watch. Indeed, she slowed down and enjoyed each moment.

Mindfulness also reminds me of the lyrics of a Simon and Garfunkel song;

Slow down, you move too fast.
You’ve got to make the morning last.
Just kickin’ down the cobble stone,
Lookin’ for fun and feelin’ groovy…..

Let’s try to use that as our goal today; slow down, look for fun and feel groovy!

Oh yes, and be mindful while we are at it!

Enjoy the journey, Kathryn
