Being ‘Well-liked’ Does Help the Job!

Being ‘Well-liked’ Does Help the Job.

“I don’t think anyone likes me.” My client started to explain the reason for his call.  “No one likes me at this new job.”

My client, a well-established Project Manager, was hired six months ago to fill the shoes of a middle-manager position.

He knew the industry, but was not settling into the position. I was invited in on a Saturday morning to look at his desk, office and meeting areas with a feng shui perspective.

So, what was really going on?

  • The guy across from him bugged him from the first day.
  • While my client was trying to be ‘cooperative’, he was also asking a lot of questions that were making people nervous.
  • Requests for information were not getting back to him and he seemed to be chasing his tail. As a result, his reports to the VP’s were delayed.

On the bright side, his desk was in the best position for success, and his Administrative Assistant seated properly on his right side.

When I asked him why he was hired, he rambled on a bit and then mentioned the key words: ‘to make change’. He wasn’t there to lay anyone off, he was there to help simplify Project Delivery and smooth out the reporting delays.

Of course no one likes him because people resist change!

Positive or negative, people naturally resist change. They were probably thinking “What is he going to do?”

(And he was looking at me, thinking “What is she going to do?”)

  • We defined the need to articulate the changes positively.
  • He needed to establish trust, working with the department, not against them.
  • I suggested he bring in some personal items like a photo of the family, a coffee mug and perhaps a plant. The action of ‘settling in’ was focus for him, but others could see he would be staying for a length of time.
  • We planted a lead-crystal on his desk, inconspicuously facing the offending co-worker and provide a ‘barrier’ for the negative energy.

Many of these ‘cures’ are logical and at first may not be considered feng shui. But they are! Feng Shui is all about the energy in an environment. Change, which is inevitable, is to change energy.

The only thing I suggested from the ‘feng shui magic box’ was to place a protective crystal on his desk. Energy crystals come in many sizes and can reflect, deflect and multiply light and energy in different directions. The negativity and animosity that was flourishing between the two coworkers needed to be addressed. Some people use a ‘worry box’ or a ‘lucky rabbit foot’ to contain their angst. By placing your worries and concerns onto a tangible object, suddenly, they all go away.

A few weeks later my client reported that things were quieter at the office. He was not running around anxious or frustrated, but rather calm and reasonable; which is probably why they hired him in the first place.

He also has more time to develop new habits. My client has been there long enough to have an assortment of unfiled folders, multiple projects open on his desk and multiple conversations going on at once.

It is only time until we need to address the clutter issues that may manifest.

We can talk about that another day.
